Rationale and objectives: Music is a part of very different aspects of life and we use it in very different ways – when we party, when we are doing the dishes, when we are alone and when we are together… But what is the role or function of the music? And are there any issues connected with music in particular settings?
The aim of this course is that you will get an understanding of music as culture and thus be able to address questions like those above in a meaningful way.
Content: We will discuss music in relation to different subjects as identity, religion, gender issues or questions of censorship, posthumanity and post-colonial issues.
Methods: lectures, discussions, student presentations, group work, individual assignements.
