Global Democracies and Citizenship

Course Aim:

With the aim of deepening students understanding of democracy, this course shall offer an opportunity for students to learn about democratic systems practiced in different countries across the globe; students shall explore and analyse democratic practices in countries such as USA, China, North Korea, Iran and Denmark so as to assess to what extent the governance of the countries conforms to the expected internationally agreed principles and values of a democratic state.

Methods:

- Lectures, study excursions, guest speakers, group discussions, short videos, and student presentations.
- Students shall be accorded an opportunity to visit the Danish parliament and elected officials at a municipal council so as to gain some insights on the role of a parliament and elected officials in a democracy.

Learning Outcome:
At the end of the course, students shall have deepened their knowledge on the principles and values of democratic governance, citizenry participation and accountability.
