Jon Stewart (News Anchor)

Teachers: Claus Staal and Nikolaj Sahlstrøm      Lessons: 4 /week

Aims:

This class offers you an opportunity to critically evaluate news. We will look at different types of media, discuss their relative merit, and learn to select pieces of news based on criteria of actuality, relevance, identification, sensationalism, conflict and exclusivity/inclusivity. Finally we will take aim at presenting the news in an exciting fashion.

Contents:

By examining a number of news channels, both national and international sources, mainstream and esoteric, we will identify a broad selection of news that we find well suited to be presented to the other students during fellowships at the school. We will engage in a discussion on the nature of the news according to the aforementioned criteria as well as thoroughly discuss why and how to present them.

We will look into the ethical and political aspects of journalism and media, considering how to crosscheck facts and the importance of attribution.

As presentation is an integral part of this course and we will prepare and evaluate each news session looking at the do’s and don’ts of public speaking.
